So as I’m pretty sure we all know by now, we got some art and info on the mysterious Asami (first mentioned on the original VA list) today. And as it turns out, she’s related to, and the presumed daughter of, the just-as-mysterious Hiroshi Sato.

Remember back when the leaks were coming fast and hard every weekend? One of the screenshots we got featured this mysterious masked man:

He’s shown in a dark room with Amon, staring at a map on the wall. His unique uniform and seeming familiarity with the big bad marks whoever he is as someone with a high position of authority in the Equalists - maybe even the second-in-command.

When this shot was first leaked, several people theorized he might be the “Hiroshi Sato” mentioned in the official VA list. His name is Japanese for “generous help” - which is an unusually specific translation for Avatar, as few of the names they use are direct translations of anything. That indicates that his name means something in the context of his character. What if Hiroshi Sato is a rich industrialist secretly funding the Equalists? What if his name refers to the financial support he’s giving them?

Even if he’s not paying for the movement, his name would still be indicative of the help he would give Amon as their second-in-command. It could even hint at the “generous help” he thinks he’s giving society by helping to remove benders.

Now look at these three shots. The two on the far left are closeups of Equalist concept art shown at SDCC 2011, the middle is a headshot of the man shown above, and the far right picture is a closeup of the item Asami is holding in her concept art.

Oh.

And for the record? Asami’s a nonbender.
