You know you’re only contributing to problem when you alienate huge groups of people based on the actions of a few people. Yeah you shouldn’t have to take shit from men, white people, or even straight people but you should at least tolerate us just as you wish to be tolerated. When a person kills or rapes another person it shouldn’t be seen as a man killing a women, or a white killing a black, or even a straight killing a gay; we should see it as a horrible and brutal act that human beings inflict on each other daily and not worry about what category the aggressor fits in. We should just worry about how we can stop these tragedies from happening in the first place. Compassion for one another is what we need; compassion that does not end at sexuality or gender.

I see so much wasted potential, such smart people doing such foolish bickering. How sad it is that we cannot see past national borders, beyond mere sexual preference, and how we sit blinded thinking that the from that stands before us is not of our own flesh and blood because of mere skin color. For us to realize our true potential as species we only need the universal comradely and acceptance of all peoples.

Life is hard enough, let’s work together to get through it. Let’s work to end the rape, murder, and maiming of your community; let’s work to ease the suffering of everyone.

Yo, sleepwatcher! Let’s look at your magnanimous claim that violence supersedes identity:

When a person kills or rapes another person it shouldn’t be seen as a man killing a women, or a white killing a black, or even a straight killing a gay; we should see it as a horrible and brutal act that human beings inflict on each other daily and not worry about what category the aggressor fits in.

That’s very noble of you, but things aren’t that simple. If the act of aggression was removed from all social constructs and occurred in some kind of transdimensional void, then yes, the genders and races and sexualities of the parties involved would be meaningless. However, because we live in a world where influence is, you know, a thing, that’s not possible. Power dynamics in our society are often a factor in or even directly responsible for murder - for example, a man will kill a woman because he’s angry at her for denying him sex, where a woman will kill a man because she’s trying to protect herself and/or her children from his abuses. Additionally, examining crime in a vacuum is impossible because the outcome of the agression is also heavily influenced by kyriarchy. Black men make up an incredibly disproportionate amount of American prisoners, because our underlying assumption that being black makes you more dangerous and prone to violence influences the length and severity of the sentences they receive, especially when compared to white criminals. Black people are also far more likely to be punished for a crime they didn’t commit for the same reason. And when a black person is the victim, they are blamed for the crime while the white perpetrator is given lots of excuses and attention. Therefore, trying to say white-on-black and black-on-white crime are essentially the same is ignoring the fact that the consequences for both of these crimes will be far different and heavily influenced by racism. THAT is why we look at crimes in the context of the races/genders/sexualities of the people involved: because those factors change how the crime is punished, even though they SHOULD be the same.

Additionally, as a white man, when you tell a woman of color that she should look ~*~beyond~*~ race and gender, you are telling her to stop talking about the unique pain and suffering she’s faced and that it means nothing to you because YOU aren’t affected. You are speaking over her, and you feel comfortable doing that because you’ve been conditioned to ignore or disparage women of color your entire life. And that is fucking racist and misogynistic as hell. How can you be so certain that suffering is the same among all kinds of people when your vision is clouded by your power and influence as a white male, and you shut down all the oppressed individuals who try to tell you otherwise? If you wanna talk about humanity as a species, let’s fucking talk about humanity as a species: humans learn and grow by expanding beyond their horizons and walking in the shoes of other people to see what their lives are like. We become better and stronger by listening to others. Women and people of color and queer folks have been forced to listen to the words of cishet white men for centuries: when are you going to take your damn turn?

And really, the fact that all three of your supposedly enlightened examples play to existing power dynamics - man kills woman, white person kills black person, straight person kills gay person - says more than any essay I write ever could.
